A Pathfinder and peace maker…Grandeur in Onitsha…Beware: the watchdog has sharpened its teeth…2nd Niger Bridge…plus South East Digest…
A Pathfinder caught on the other side of Bad News
One of his businesses, Ugoo Hotels, Abata, Nsugbe, lost over N20 million, by way of damages to their properties and facilities, in the recent unrest between some Anam and Nsugbe youths. He wrote it off as a business loss in the interest of brotherly love, peace, and progress of the Omambala communities. Who does that, particularly, against the present hard times in today’s Nigeria?
Only a rare pathfinder like Onyemalivegaemechi Okeke would. Not only did he write off the loss, he offered to offset the medical treatment costs for those injured in the unfortunate incident which had nothing to do with any of his businesses, all in the interest of peace, unity and progress across Omambala communities.
MOM’s Sunday Revue sought to have a chat with this rare gem of a pathfinder. From the excerpts below (continued after the South East Digest) one can see through this great soul and what has formed his attitude to life:

Grandeur in Onitsha
It was grandeur at the highest level as the 2022 Ofala of His Majesty, Nnaemeka Achebe, Agbogidi, Obi of Onitsha, kicked off last Friday. The biggest socio-cultural fiesta in the South Est of Nigeria is scheduled to end on Wednesday, October 26, 2022 with a banquet to be hosted by Globacom.
His Majesty also used the occasion of the Ofala to commemorate with thanksgiving his 20th anniversary as monarch. He ascended the throne of Ezechima 20 years ago on May 14, 2002, which coincidentally was his 61st birthday.
The Ofala is the high point of the Onitsha ceremonial cycle. The Obi of Onitsha is the celebrant of this spectacle which is rooted in deep spirituality. The Ofala is an occasion for the monarch to fulfil certain obligations. It is primarily a celebration by the monarch and his subjects of the monarch’s annual emergence from seclusion, during which period the monarch has successfully negotiated the fortunes of the kingdom. It is also a re-enactment of the joy which the monarch shared with his subjects, at the discovery that yam is non-toxic, and a valuable source of food.
This year’s ceremonies were attended by several dignitaries including the former Governor of Anambra State and Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, as well as the present Governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo. It was Professor Soludo’s first attendance at the Ofala as the Governor of Anambra State.
Globacom and International Breweries Plc are the official sponsors of the Ofala. Globacom has been partnering with the Onitsha Traditional Council since 2011. The relationship between these bodies and the Onitsha community has contributed in no small measure to the growth and development of the Ofala.
We bring you some photo highlights below:
Beware: the watchdog has sharpened its teeth
The days of looting and other forms of corruption by politicians and other public office holders appear to be numbered, particularly, in the South East and the South South of Nigeria. This is because Nigerian journalists are being reinvigorated to play their roles as watchdogs of the society more effectively.
Frontfoot Media Initiative, a Lagos-based non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of journalism in Nigeria and the African continent, has in the last two weeks been training journalists in the South East and South South on how to expose these negative practices by public office holders. The first in the series of workshops took place in Benin City, Edo State, penultimate week, while that of the South East held in Awka, Anambra State, last week.
Media specialists, backed by excellent audit experts, led the workshop at both centres. They included, Sully Abu, the Chairman of FrontFoot Media Initiative, who was for many years a senior Editor in The Guardian newspapers group, Eluem Emeka Izeze, Managing Director of FrontFoot Media Initiative, who was a former Editor of The Guardian and Managing Director of that newspaper group for over 17 years, and Chido Nwakanma, veteran journalist, former President of the Public Relations Consultants Association of Nigeria (PRCAN) and lecturer at the School of Media and Communication. Sonala Olumhense, a renowned syndicated columnist, spoke to the participants from New York on "The Imperative of Audit Reporting for Nigerian Journalism" and "Where can a journalist find state audit reports?"
The audit experts
included Prof. Sir Paschal I. P. Okolie, Special Adviser to the Governor of
Enugu State on Financial Matters; Dr Emenike E.E. Ezinando, Permanent
Secretary, Anambra State Ministry of Finance, and Professor E.I. Okoye,
Director of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Business School.
Second Niger Bridge completed, inauguration date fixed
– Buhari’s Minister
Babatunde Fashola, Minister of Works and Housing, has confirmed that the construction of the second Niger Bridge is now completed and that it could be open to commuters by December. He said this during a press conference to announce a new end-of-term series called “PMB Administration Scorecard 2015-2023.” According to him, the only factor delaying the road’s opening is the construction of a link road, which has been hampered by the recent flooding. “I can confirm that the Second Niger Bridge itself is finished,” he said. People can now walk freely across the bridge.
“On the Asaba side, the four-kilometer
link road remains. Our dredger is
currently in place; we must rebuild the road by reclaiming sand; the recent
flood surge has slowed us down. On the Onitsha side, a seven-kilometer road
connects the bridge to the Onitsha-Owerri interchange.”

“A Pathfinder caught on the other side of Bad News”
continued
MOM’s Sunday Revue sought to have a chat with this rare gem of a pathfinder. From the excerpts below one can see through this great soul and what has formed his attitude to life:
What have been your thoughts about Nsugbe and the entire Omambala?
I wish you did not ask me this question, because I am responding with tears. When I came to find my feet in life, my thoughts about Nsugbe and Omambala in general was the thought of giving back to where I grew up from. Even before the State was created, Anambra International Company was the first name I carved out as a business name from my life in Omambala River. It was from the money gotten from the sale of my fishing activities that I sponsored my trip to Lagos and started to grow from there. In all of these I never for once forgot my home town.
How far would you say these thoughts and dreams have been met?
My thoughts and dreams for the community have been up and down the slope.
You do have quite some investments in Anambra state, particularly, Nsugbe and Omambala area, would you mind listing them?
Ok so firstly, I would mention the many factories that we were able to establish but out of mismanagement they all folded up. We set up and currently have one of the largest Palm oil farm (Umobi farms and food processing limited) in Omambala area with over 12 thousand palm trees, oil and palm kernel mills, several fish ponds, rearing and selling of cows although the cow rearing became dormant and came to a halt as the Fulani men who passed by and grazed on our farm land always stole most of the cows on their departure. When always approached or confronted, they threaten to kill my workers who are also their co-Fulani members, as my people are not ready to do farm work. I hope life will turn back and we will revive it and start up an abattoir and even extend to selling to all the neighboring towns.
Secondly, we also had a bread making factory called Anwuli Bread Industry, a candle industry, a Toilet Roll industry, managed by my brother but they all died due to bad management.
Thirdly, I later employed a fantastic intelligent trustworthy, handsome and dedicated onye Nsugbe, Mr. Peter Okoye, and we established a take away food packaging industry called World Cool. It was a fast running industry and I spent millions to see it working very well with our Ghanaian partner to oversee the day to day activities. We had customers everywhere, even from far north. The business wasn’t financially straining as the customers will pay down for any job that needed to be done. Unfortunately, I weep as this irreplaceable young man passed on. The Chinese counterparts who stayed to see that the billion dollar machines were operated smoothly ran home for fear of been kidnapped and the factory had no choice but to be closed down. The farm and the factory are still very much available as I am looking for somebody to take them up. They are very lucrative industries.
At the moment, the businesses that are currently, operational are a warehouse now turned into a brewery depot (Ugoo brewery) and is used for the distribution of International Breweries and NBL drinks in many towns with better and cheap prices as we are an appointed distributor all around Omambala area.
There is also a printing press producing light packaging and other products for some industries around Onitsha. Although our Indian Engineers have gone because of kidnaping, We are producing paper core for Toilet Roll and for Textile industries. We produce and customize cello tape as well as corrugated paper boards. We are producing CTNs for Pharmaceutical, Cosmetic, Food, Chemical, and general products manufacturers. We are covering Enugu, Anambra, Abia, and Imo States. We are now working skeletally, as most industries are not doing as well as they used to. We pray for better government so that we can increase our production capacity.
We currently have one of the best Hotels in Omambala Area, Ugoo Hotel and Suites. The hospitality is top notch as that is where you can get the cheapest and coldest drinks as we are into the distribution of drinks. We also have sections for “point and kill” fresh cat fish, as well as nkwobi, suya, shawarma, among others. We have an amusement park for the children and their mothers; restaurant, hall for meetings or weddings, night club, swimming pool, well equipped gym facility, large car packing area, among several other facilities..
We have a smaller version of Ugoo Hotel called Victoria Valley Hotel inside Nsugbe town.
We have registered a Filling Station on the highway to Otuocha. It has been approved, but we are to set up and will do so very soon.
We have applied for the approval of the international building material market to save our Omambala area from the problems of the Onitsha head bridge and the traffic problems inside Onitsha itself. The area has been inspected, I wish they will approve it so that we can start up and help our people. The shops will be open for any investor. We have richer dedicated successful businessmen very ready to come and help.
There is also a toiletries and cosmetics operation in Lagos, but with the difficult conditions currently tied to importation, we are winding down on that business and the funds are being transferred to the other establishments in Nsugbe. I pray that God will continue to bless the Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo administration.
What was your motivation for setting up these business
operations?
Just as I stated earlier,
we have more conducive environment in our home.
HOME IS HOME. As I am more
advanced in age, I can always see my achievements. All the buildings we have in Lagos and Abuja cannot be seen like my properties in
Abata. But most importantly, It is
specially for the development of our area and giving our children work. They need to study so that they can take
whatever office they deserve as well as have hands on practical experience to
be able to fend for themselves individually.
I also pray that my brothers will follow suit in each village in Omambala.
How many people would you say these businesses currently employ?
The total business was managing about 200 staff, but now we are about 50 or a little more. I know that if God opens up a way for us in the other businesses, we will be talking of no less than about 500 staff to begin with. I have trained over 70 boys, most of them are successful (bulu Ide) in their towns. I cry because I did not succeed in Anam and Nsugbe. Incidentally I am happy that about 3 of them are doing well with their houses in Lagos and in Nsugbe and their children marrying and expanding their linage.
Let’s go back to your growing up years. What was your vision when you were settling off in life? Where and what did you think you would be by now?
In fact when I started my life’s journey, I had no vision as we were following our fathers' ways. We grow up and join in farming, build mud houses, get married and have our children and continue farming. It was a very easy and simple lifestyle. However, I was lucky to have been engaged by a teacher whom I served as a house help. When he left Nsugbe, HRH Igwe J. Anyansi equally took me on as his house help and I learnt a lot from him as my teacher. As to where and what I would have thought I would be now, I would say that would have only been the grace of God but what I know for a fact is that I would have made it in life because I had that zeal and determination to push past whatever circumstances that came as a challenge to me.
Looking back, what would you say were the major milestones in your life?
This is a very tricky question because as it is I have so many milestones, but I will touch on the ones that are very important to me.
I think my milestones, started from how God used my humility to induce the proprietor of the commercial school at Onitsha, Sir Livinus Mbaduya, to call me back to manage his typing pool. When his friend Barrister Ana wanted a reliable secretary, he sent me there. After a year I got another employment with a pharmaceutical company at Onitsha, managed by my mentor Chief Sylvester Nwobu Alor, where I learnt importation which was another milestone for me. Can you imagine that my employer was the one who signed guarantor for my employment into Acson and Cotson limited, who eventually transferred me to Lagos to manage their motor spare parts market, again another milestone. After a while, my Lagos Manager, Chief Pat Akanegbu, transferred me to his French customer. Within a year, the French man made me his African Distributor. With this, I then faced importation of motor space parts fully. I am cutting the story short because of your time, but I am sure in all I have said you will see all the milestones I was able to achieve especially at the time.
Do you have any regrets? If so, what and what do you regret and why?
Well, we all do have regrets in life but that’s what makes it life and we have to move past it and make it better. My first regret was when Shannahan came from Aguleri to recruit boys for priesthood, I had always wanted to be a priest but I had nobody to sponsor me. More so, it was obvious that God had another direction for how my life should go and I thank him every day for everything he has done in my life so far as he opened a lot of ways for me without any effort. I am happy that I am contributing to the Church, both home and away and do the much I can in Nsugbe.
If you really want to know about my greatest regrets today, I will tell you that I am not only regretting, I AM CRYING over how our children have turned the world upside down (bulu ovee nsala tukwasi na enu nliakpu) and mashed up everything all together. Good attitude turned to bad and bad attitude turned to excellently worse behavior. They do not believe in REPERCUSSION or Karma. Many of them have burnt their fingers and have no future and If you want to advise them, they will find you way too far and old as they want it done today or SOONER than today. It is not only in our place that this occurs, it is happening all over the world. Can you imagine when you want to carry a baby of one month he will cry, but when you give that same child money, he or she will hold it as if that’s all what their life is depended on.
Our current young parents are not also helping as they have no time to train their children which is the highest blessing one can have as we cannot buy them with anything; when some are dying to have just one. The unfortunate young parents met the world of greed, ambition and ever ready to own the entire world and they will still not be satisfied. They cannot come home to spend only 10 minutes of their time with their children. If a parent can just give their child ONLY 10 minutes of their time, talk to him or her connectively, advise them properly on the do’s and don'ts, a disciplined, humble, honest child, will represent you anywhere and take care of whatever you must have left behind and even produce more. A bad child will sell all you have suffered to acquire, and destroy the family’s honourable name. These greedy young parents will send the bad untrained ignorant children into the war front. You can imagine what they can be. I call the world of today, WAR FRONT. Because it is not what we met (ngige na agba egu okuku nagbe egu). Everything is upside down and things have fallen apart. The greatest liar or criminal of any type, is what my uncle Chief Ozoemene, a musician said (stealing is stealing, whether with an arm or a pen). It has reached the extent now that a man will heartlessly kidnap a fellow human being and mercilessly torture the person to death all for money. I think that most of my age mates are simply waiting for when we will leave this world as we cannot render any more help. I cried when I visited Ghana slave trade camp and I wish these boys would visit such places and learn what history they are creating for the upcoming children, I pray that history will not repeat itself again.
I however expected our youths to know better. My advice is that, with what is currently happening, I think that Nsugbe and the entire Omambala will change with this coming election, because the world in general is changing by the second. We have all it takes to grow. We have the boys, but they should all go to school and focus more on technical schooling, so that if there is no white collar jobs, one can set up his own little business whether carpentry or electrical etc. and start up something no matter how little but it will be an honest thing. Our sons outside the State should join me to bring more industries and activities home. If the sons and daughters of every town in Omambala set up two industries in each town, we will lighten and liven up the area and our boys will know that they cannot start work today and earn the Managing Director’s salary immediately. If they take it easy and be obedient and humble in their daily lives, they will win. We will all present various small scale industries that can fly in Omambala and its environs and all our children will go industrial, hence nobody will have time to live a bad life.
In the light of recent developments, what would you do differently?
I think that it is better to stop further efforts until after the election (Nkwo ukpo ekwuzie etu aga esi lee ewu.)
We understand that you help the people and communities a great deal, would you mind enumerating some of the supports/helps?
There have been so many supports rendered over the years from establishing the BUFALO FOOTBALL CLUB OF NSUGBE under the captainship of Mr. Akpe, but that died a natural death due to the excessive and expensive lifestyle of the boys. The building industry managed by Chief Ikechukwu Nwalor, which was designed to help people build their houses on contract with the cheapest prices in building materials but with the best quality all was fruitless. But we intend to revive this if and when the approval is gotten for the market we intend to start up.
But so far so good as I will say that since 1977, I have been the harvest and bazaar chairman for St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Nsugbe, for over seven times. Since then I have been participating in all activities, building and renovating the church. I donated the first 100 nine inches block for the construction of the church. At that time cement was very expensive at N2.50 a bag. Our relationship with Anam was very good Igwe John Ameke donated N10,000 and in respect to elders I couldn’t do more than him so I donated N9,990. Igwe called me and as I thought he wanted to appreciate my respect, instead he rather knocked my head, and asked me to do something. I did not want to disrespect him so I donated 100 blocks and 5 bags of cement. May God bless his soul. Amen.
I built the Reverend Father’s story building and when fire burnt it, our amiable Bishop Isizoh demanded that I should expand it so I re- built it and His Grace officially dedicated it. In the latest reconstruction of St John’s Church, our outstanding Archbishop Valerian Okeke asked for total reconstruction of the Church. I took up and roofed the entire church, with special services provided by Eng. Zeigbo and Eugene Ado my electrical engineer who wired the entire church and its environs. We fixed new lights, fans, challis and some other facilities. I have assisted in the church and the priests houses. You know that every Priest will like to write his name, so we are following all the Priests from the time of Late Rev Ezeabasili till date. I donated fifty long pews.
I donated the robe for the choir and their music instruments and so much more I cannot remember. When Rev Father Ngwu called me on his arrival at Nsugbe, I told him that I did not know him which he attested to, but what he was told is that any priest that will work successfully in Nsugbe, must call me on their arrival. My brain was blown off. We worked together on the house I was building for Rev Father Joeben which was finished in his tenor and he took the glory.
I also assisted in building Nsugbe high school and hall, taking up control when it deteriorated for over 240 students cutting all the bushy trees around, reconstructed the lab building, built a very long dormitory to accommodate students from Onitsha, Umueri, Otuocha, 33 and its environs. I met with school authority who then allowed me to withdraw Late Mr. John Nwoye who revived it and brought the students number to 550 students in two years. I was given a house and my house will wait for me to come to present their cup every interhouse competition, it was always a big ceremony O!. I built a small hall for meeting and toilets along with 200 plastic chairs. Whenever I was in town I will use my Landrover to block the gate from late comers who must kneel down for at least 5 minutes. I was ashamed the day I asked a teacher from Nteje to kneel down with them for coming late but I later offered him a room in Nsugbe to reduce his stress.
I gave scholarship to one hundred students from primary to Secondary School covering Nsugbe town and Abata. The selection was organized by Honorable Tony Nwoye, his brother and others. At that time I was spending N5m per annum, it was much but I enjoyed the assistance and their prayers were unending even up till today. I carried this act for 10 years even when there was a rumor that I wanted to be a politician, I immediately stopped it because that wasn’t the goal. I think today they will see that I have no energy to be a politician in Africa.
I diverted to Lagos where I gave our wives trading loan to be renewed every 2 years if they kept their own side of the contract which they failed to do. Father Acho met with me and reminded me of my promise and irrespective of their errors, I should try again which I immediately dropped another 2m to renew it to 5m if all were met but as usual, they failed on this.
When Father Tansi issue came up I took some Army officer to the forest which Aguleri people allocated to him. I built a mini church which was later blessed by his Grace Bishop Isizoh. He named it Alter of the Church. The church is still functioning till date. I was overwhelmed the day it was dedicated as I saw over 300 priest, over 50 sisters and the rest. When his grace brought my wife and I to the alter, I became confused. I did not know what to say.(imalu na anyamili nwoke na acha Nzunzu) I tried to voice what I cannot remember.
I used to sponsor Aba village my maternal home in anything they were doing. I assisted Nsugbe in constructing Avilo Market. I built 10 Shades very small shades.
I have trained so many of our sons and currently doing so and they are doing miraculously well for themselves. and the list goes on I cannot remember some but to God Almighty be the glory.
Looking forward, where do you see Omambala in the next ten years?
You know that (ike agugo nmanwu at 74 years). I do not know where I will be in 10 years. But in any case I think and believe that Omambala will be the hub of Anambra. We have a lot of energetic youths, we have the large farm lands, we have a lot of minerals, our ponds and fish can feed this nation and we can export yam, rice, potatoes, fish and a whole lot of other items as demonstrated by the last administration.
People like us with large farms can rear any type of animal even Evi Igbo. Our youths at large are intelligent and if they are brought up technically, we can produce innumerable equipment. If our boys can emulate us of old, every village will have one establishment or the other. We only have to beg our youths to go to school. Specifically, Technical school so that they do not have to wait for white collar jobs. It is a pity that all of them are routing for lazy political courses. Some actually will be politicians as it is inevitable, but not the number we have now. I know that they are ruling us, but (nke onye ji ka). If more of our boys are technical they will be too busy for politicians to use as tools whilst the real politicians cut out for the job can gently run their politics with respect and dignity. I cannot imagine what happened as I do not know how the case started for one to take up a weapon. In any case, use of arms is criminal. The two Igwes have a lot of job to do and this ugly incident took place just when we were getting to start the Otite festival. During our time, all our age grades from Anam come to Nsugbe. We will share them one by one for one native week. When it is theirs we will go to them. Life was very sweet, (BUT WE DID NOT TOUCH ANY GIRLOOO!!!). It was an abomination.
Thank you for this wonderful opportunity. Well, telling you any other thing is to look at what will help us and our future (OKWU NMUO) and this lies with our youths. While a good idea sells, it all depends on our youths whose future is at stake. They may not understand our advice now but nothing comes easy. THEY MUST ALWAYS REMEMBER ALMIGHTY GOD AND BE HUMBLE AT ALL TIMES. That is my motto. We met this world as virgin and fine as it was, so we saw the good part of the world, unfortunately we were dragged into the bad world. If I tell you in our own way the young will think we are too old, just like my grand children will happily tell me that I am old..
