“The largest gathering of masquerades in the world”

Thousands of holiday makers and tourists from across Anambra State and the Diaspora last Friday, January 6, 2023 witnessed what has been described as “the largest gathering of masquerades in the world”.  The occasion was the 4th edition of the Ada Aguleri Carnival of the modern era.

Ada carnival is a play commemorating the defeat of slave raiders in the 19th century.  The slave raiders believed to have come from Arochukwu, Item, and Ohafia areas were a scourge to the entire Omambala region of Anambra State until their defeat by Aguleri warriors.

The carnival was revamped and given verve by His Royal Majesty, Dr Michael Chineme Idigo V, Ezeudo, Igwe Aguleri, upon his ascension to the throne, and it is a part of the Aguleri Ovala week-long ceremonies.

We serve you photos from the carnival at the end of the “South East Digest”.

“Tinubu is a Genius, but…”

There is a growing concern about the coherence of the APC Presidential Candidate, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and his ability to steer the ship of the Nigerian State should he eventually emerge as winner in the forthcoming Presidential Elections.  Since his “Balablue” gaffe and the Chatham House debacle, the APC candidate has not failed to drop one clanger or the other at every campaign stop.

Political watchers are wondering what type of Presidency Nigeria would have should the APC candidate become elected.

"Majority of Ndigbo will vote for Bola Tinubu," Governor Hope Uzodimma boasts

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has said that the majority of the people in the southeast will vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu. Uzodimma while speaking on Channels Television said that there are indications that the ruling party will win at all levels of government in the general elections.  Hope Uzodimma has said that the majority of the southeast residents will vote for Bola Tinubu of the APC.

The Governor said that President Muhammadu Buhari's administration has delivered landmark projects across the region in the last seven and half years since it took over power from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).  Disturbing message for Tinubu as Atiku speaks on what happened to Buhari's "real" preferred candidate He also said that in democracy, what is most important is to have leaders who have the people's interests at heart.

Buhari okays high-tech deployment for South East insecurity fight

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved deployment of high technology to boost the insecurity fight in the South East.  Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State made the disclosure after a meeting with the Nigerian leader at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He had pleaded for the fillip to tame the menace.  Uzodimma said with the presidential approval, advanced surveillance equipment are to be delivered in no time to the region to enhance the expedition without collateral damage.

The governor explained that his visit was also to thank the President for what he had done for the region, especially the recent conversion of the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri to a university teaching hospital for the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) and upgrade of Alvan Ikoku College of Education to a federal university of education.

His words: “My visit, which is on behalf of the people, is also to thank him (Buhari) for the various support he gave to us during this period of security challenges and the support he has also given us in terms of various approvals.

“The approval to convert Federal Medical Centre, Owerri to a university teaching hospital for the Federal University of Technology, Owerri and the approval that converted Alvan Ikoku College of Education to a federal university of education.

“Only two weeks ago, Igbo that came home from Lagos and outside South East enjoyed benefit of the second Niger Bridge – something that is worthy of commendation.

“I also appealed to him (President) for further support through technological deployment. We have agreed to do an advanced kind of security control in the South East. And he has also given his approval.

“And in a moment from now, we’ll be getting some surveillance equipment and modern technologies that would help us manage security and fight crime with little or no collateral damage to the environment (society).”

Another company begins vehicle manufacturing plant in Enugu

Another vehicle manufacturing company has started vehicle making in Enugu, like the famous Innoson Motors. The company, Ingrace Motors, was praised by the Enugu state government for promoting indigenously made vehicles in Nigeria.

The Chief Executive Officer of Ingrace, Chinedu Onu, displayed the company’s brands and donated one of the vehicles to the Enugu state government recently to assess their quality, flexibility and strength.  The state government congratulated the company for demonstrating a dogged spirit despite the harsh business climate in Nigeria.  Secretary to the state government, Simon Otuanya, praised the company’s vision, which he says is in line with the state government’s policy of promoting the safety of lives and property. He thanked Ingrace Motors for the donation and informed the firm that the state government will come up with policies to foster its growth and achieve its vision in the interest of Enugu state.

Onu had told the state governor that the company has gotten a license from the Nigerian government to assemble vehicles in the country, saying that they are into a partnership with Chinese companies.
